Interview and presentation at Real-Time 2010 in Paris, France with Olivier Rudloff from Converteam. Discussing marine test bench using an Opal-RT real-time simulator

Test benches are used everywhere in industry where quality and utmost reliability matter. The equipment being tested has to be examined under extreme speed, torque and dynamic response conditions in order to ensure that it will withstand its normal lifetime without any failure. In addition, test bench engineering increasingly relies on the simulation of virtual equipment and subassemblies in order to save costs and development time.

This presentation will focus on the functionality and architecture of a Marine Test Bench, developed by Converteam for one of the company’s customers. The Marine Test Bench was developed to meet the following needs:
•    To be used for the customer training, enabling reproduction of the exact customer application
•    Support for the Engineering Department in case of faults on customer equipment
•    To be used to validate new controller technology (hardware and software)

The Marine Test Bench incorporates an Opal-RT simulator which enables a number of real-time simulation functions including HIL simulation without the need to change controller parameters, simulation of network fluctuations, ease of simulation of parameter variations, achievement of low simulation time steps and simulation of large numbers of switches.

The presentation will include a case study of a Converteam customer using the Marine test bench. An overview of the customer application will include discussion of the entire test Bench architecture, how it has evolved to meet customer requirements, the challenges faced in implementing the Test Bench and results gained by the customer through Test bench use.
